More details of business description for AGL

To generate electricity, AGL established Torrens Island Power Station and Somerton Power Station and owns one large scale solar electricity generator, Wilpena Pound, located at Central Flinders Ranges in South Australia. For the development of CSG, AGL carried on several projects, such as Sydney Basin gas projects, Moranbah gas project, and Gloucester CSG project. Besides, AGL operates gas-fired gas fired cogeneration plants at Cooper's Brewery in South Australia and at Symex Holdings in Port Melbourne.

Moreover, A number of wind farms such as Hallett Wind Farm and Wattle Point Wind Farm are operated with new development projects in the pipeline. It has 10 hydroelectric generating schemes comprising 16 power stations in Victoria and New South Wales. AGL also owns and operates several renewable landfill gas and biogas (sewage) generation facilities across Australia, including Glenorchy City Council (Tasmania), Hobart City Council (Tasmania), Gosnells City Council (Western Australia), and Rockingham City Council (Western Australia).

The diversity of geographic location, fuel source, and generation type mitigates AGL’s exposure to both market risks and operating risks, and provides a platform for growth in a carbon constrained future. The integrated generation portfolio of AGL has resulted in strong returns and has promoted its merchant business performance significantly. Upstream gas which is formed to focus on the equity gas acquisitions, has improved the acquisitions of coal seam gas reserves in the Gloucester Basin, whilst the successful takeover of Sydney Gas Limited also leads to a great progress on the gas reserves. These acquisitions provide AGL with 100% control of nearly all reserves of coal seam gas around AGL’s key Newcastle and Sydney markets in New South Wales which enhances its competitiveness as its competitors would have longer distance of transportation. Additionally, retail and merchant energy business has been applied outstandingly to the implementation of the Project Phoenix change program, which integrated a number of legacy billing systems onto a single SAP platform and helped in the customer services. AGL claims now it will focus on the delivery of the promised benefits of the program to the business and on further improving the customer services.
